Terry, my daughter-in-law, Jeff, my friend and I, Fred, booked this trip over a year in advance. Several days prior to the trip a tropical wave left the west coast of Africa. This eventually became hurricane Florence. Heading toward the Carolinas, this had the potential to impact our travel plans. Jeff’s initial flights went through Charlotte and so he was rerouted through Dallas. The National Geographic tour would have us travel to Lima on Sunday but I always like to leave at least a day early in case there’s a problem with the flights. We converged on the Miami airport on Saturday morning without incident. Boarding the flight to Lima went smoothly until a passenger decided to force an overhead bin to close on his suitcase and broke the bin cover. We had to deplane and wait while it was sealed closed and this delayed our departure. We had initially intended to meet my friend, Katia, for a drink at our hotel. She lives in Lima not far from the airport. We didn’t settle into the hotel, which is across the street from the airport, until almost 11:00 and so it was too late for Katia to join us. Terry went to bed but Jeff and I went to the bar for our first pisco sour.
